Senate Notched Up Workers Minimum wage


News Buffet — The Senate notched up workers expectations of an enhanced minimum wage yesterday when it fast-tracked the passage of the bill to amend the National Minimum Wage that provides N18, 000 as the least that could be paid to a worker in Nigeria. Cairo — Several hundred thousand protesters massed in Cairo's central Tahrir Square exploded into joy Friday, after Vice-President Omar Suleiman made the announcement that Hosni Mubarak had resigned as president of Egypt after three decades in office.
Finally heeding to 18 days of calls from protesters, the surprise statement marks Mubarak as the second Arab leader forced to quit by a peaceful popular uprising. Last month, Tunisia's President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali resigned in the face of massive street protests against his rule.

In a televised address late Thursday night, embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak had delegated executive authority to his newly appointed vice- president, but stopped short of stepping down.

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, arrested Dr Hassan Lawal, a former Minister of Works in late President Umoru Yar'Adua administration over an alleged N50 billion scam bordering on money laundering and gross neglect to the tenets of due process in the transaction of government business

Lawal, who was arrested in the early hours of yesterday, was said to have been playing a hide and seek game with the operatives of the anti-graft agency since he was placed on the watch list last year.

The high rate of crime and corruption in Nigeria has gone beyond its bound, It was reliably gathered that Lawal allegedly perpetrated massive fraud, gross abuse of office, monumental financial recklessness and indiscriminate award of contracts to allies and cronies.

Hassan, a founding member of the PDP in Nasarawa State recently explained to reporters after his defection that even though he was elected by his local government as delegate to the presidential election of the PDP, his name was arbitrarily replaced.

He was reported to have pledged to pull the same string he pulled to contribute to the victory of the governor, Aliyu Akwe Doma, in 2007 to support the CPC governorship candidate, Umaru Tako Al_Makura, in the April election.
