P-Square moves into N100m mansion

Fresh off an extended tour of the United States, the Okoye brothers recently took delivery of some brand new wheels courtesy of Coscharis Motors. As the family moved into their newly completed Omole mansion, all four brand new auto mobiles moved in with them, relegating their previous fleet (which included Hummer jeeps ) to the background. So the equation is finally complete; brand new home, brand new cars, it's a brand new P. Square!

According to their spokesperson, the Kora Award winners have just taken delivery of two Range Rover Sports, one X6 BMW and a Jaguar, all 2010 models which set them back a cool N50 million. This calculation is apparently without their eye-popping N100 million home located at Lola Holloway Street, Omole Estate Phase 1 where they've finally moved to after months of living in a hotel.

The Okoye's accommodation problem unravelled in the most public when the twins were evicted from their rented duplex in the same estate; the owner of the duplex alleged that the Okoyes messed his house up.

Thankfully, all that's in the past now, Paul and Peter Okoye were reportedly attacked with love and accolades in the United States by their Nigerian and American fans, while on their 45-day musical tour which ended July 24.

"I don't actually know how to explain how successful the tour was because aside the fact that all the shows were sold-out, the passion shown by the fans, particularly the white ones, was incredible. I never knew the Americans love us that much. Surprisingly, they know the lyrics of our songs and were singing along", Peter enthused.

Dakore and MAI Co-star for Complete Fashion Magazine

Fashion is a new magazine focused on the very best of commercial Nigerian fashion and celebrating the stylish looks of Nigerian celebrities.

The magazine is lead by General Editor Franka Asindi and the new issue of the magazine features a double cover with Nigerian actress Dakore Egbuson on one cover and designer Ohimai Atafo of MAI on the other cover.

Dakore looks absolutely dazzling is three dresses by MAI. On the cover, she rocks a black monosleeve dress with a dramatic jewel detailed neckline by MAI. The dress is paired with red platform sandals and a black fascinator. Inside the magazine, we see Dakore in a gorgeous floor-length red gown with a multi-coloured brooch also by MAI. Her final look is a swinging knee-length yellow dress with a delicate black lace overlay. The dress was paired with pearls and black and gold platforms.

Ohimai looked dapper as always in a blue blazer paired with a striped shirt and white trousers.

In her interview, Dakore talks about her personal style (vivacious and playful), her famous locs (she calls them 'LOCS' because they are "Not Dreadful" and she is "Not Locked" - so she took out the "Dread" and the "K") and style addictions (Louboutins). She also discussed her projects including The Dakore Show.

In his interview, MAI opened up and detailed his journey into the world of fashion (he started out buying waistcoats for his friends who were getting married). Ohimai also had words of encouragement for up-and-coming designers and finally he discussed the future plans for his label.

We totally love the concept of the double cover and photo shoot! Kudos to Complete Fashion and the team behind the shoot.

AGN suspends Emeka Ike

The Actors Guild of Nigeria [AGN] on Monday, July 27 suspended Nollywood star actor and winner of the first edition of Gulder Ultimate Search: Celebrity Showdown, Emeka Ike as the Vice President, south-east of the guild.

Reports have it that the Chairman, Board of Trustees of AGN, Prince Ifeanyi Dike, claimed that making the decision was inevitable as Emeka's alleged misconduct and anti-guild activities are becoming unbearable.

"The actors in Nigeria have unanimously decided to suspend Emeka Ike indefinitely for anti-guild activities. We have also stripped him as the Vice President, South East of the guild. Let me use this medium to state that the move to suspend him was not made by the Board of Trustees, but AGN members who have been monitoring his anti-guild activities for some time now.

"He has been disturbing the peace of this guild, sponsoring thugs to threaten us. So right now, anybody who deals with him on behalf of AGN is doing so at his or her own peril," Dike said.

Dike further claimed that he and other members of the Board of Trustees have been receiving life threatening text messages from unknown persons.

"Emeka Ike has been sponsoring some unknown persons to harass us, particularly in Anambra State. I received a message recently that if I come to Anambra State, I will be killed," Dike said.

In reaction the grievous accusations against the Nollywood star, Emeka Ike, who also spoke on phone to our source said nobody can ban him from the guild.

"Who is banning who? I have not heard of it, but the BOT has expired since 2008. Their tenure has ended and they have no power to ban me. They have no powers again because they have lost in all the Eastern states where they claimed to be controlling. You need to ask them why they can't go to some states again. You can also ask them if I have not suspended Ezenna Agu as the Chairman of AGN in Anambra State.

"I have filed a case against them in court and very soon, they will go to jail because I will not make things easy for them. They are the ones that will be banned. Don't just bother yourself with anything they say because I'm the President of AGN and whatever I say is the final, just watch out," Emeka Ike said.

It was also reported that this crisis between the former the Board of Trustees and Emeka Ike's faction of AGN started last year when it was decided to form a government of national unity that will be headed by Segun Arinze.

Not satisfied with the decision, which they claimed was unpopular, a faction of the guild headed by the then Interim National President, Kanayo. O. Kanayo, went ahead to conduct an election which produced Emeka Ike as President. But the Board of Trustees maintained its decision that Segun Arinze will remain their recognised National President.

More details will be provided as the drama unfolds.

Jos air crash update: Faulty Aircraft removed

The Boeing 737 Aero Contractor aircraft which veered off the Yakubu Gowon runway in Jos Nigeria's North central region has been removed from the Jos Airport runway.

Engineers engaged by the airline also successfully replaced the damaged nose wheels which were affected by the accident.

Investigators from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority [NCAA] and the Aviation Investigation Bureau monitored the repair exercise but refused to speak to our crew in Jos after their investigation.

The AeroContractor Boeing 737-500, registration 5N-BLE performing flight AJ-345 from Lagos to Jos (Nigeria) with 87 passengers and 5 crew, overran the wet runway while landing in Jos at around 6pm (17:00Z) and came to a stop with nose gear and left main gear on soft ground. No injuries occured, both nose wheel tyres deflated.

The airline said that both nose gear tyres were punctured while landing in Jos causing handling difficulties to the crew, who however maintained control of the aircraft and stopped it safely.

All occupants disembarked safely, no additional damage occurred to the airframe. Engineers were dispatched to Jos to examine the aircraft and replace the tyres.

Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority said that the airplane approached the runway at a time of low level windshear causing an unstable approach and landing, which resulted in damage to a tyre and the airplane stopping past the runway.

Ground witnesses told the CAA they saw fire from the left hand brakes during the roll out.

No Metars and no local non-aviation weather data are available for Jos, Metars however are available for Kaduna about 100nm westnorthwest and Abuja about 100nm westsouthwest of Jos, both Metars indicating a thunderstorm cell went past the area around the time of the incident.

An infrared satellite image shows a distinct thunderstorm cell in the area.

Jos' Yakubu Gowon Airport features a runway 10/28 with a length of 3000 meters/9800 feet at an elevation of 1290 meters/4200 feet.

NDDC to tackle flood in Soku community

The Niger Delta Development Commission [NDDC] says it is working towards finding a solution to the flood problem in Soku, an oil rich community in Rivers State.

Managing Director of the NDDC, Mr. Chibuzor Ugwoha said this when representatives of the community visited him at the commission's headquarters in Port-Harcourt.

Mr. Ugwoha who assured that a team of engineers will be dispatched immediately to the community to assess the level of damage said an interim arrangement will be made to combat the flooding, pending the commencement of work on the canalization project.

Mr. Chibuzor Ugwoha said the shore protection project in the community will be reviewed to include canaliation as a deliberate effort to save the area from being submerged.

"Soku like every other community in the Niger Delta is dear to us and it is our desire to intervene in their needs. Nobody prays for this type of thing to happen, but when it does we shall fund solution to it," he said.

He dispelled insinuations that the Soku shore protection project has been abandoned adding "we are in touch with the contractor, he is mobilizing back to site please cooperate with him".

On request for provision of electricity in the community, the NDDC Boss announced that Soku will benefit from a comprehensive electrification project being planned by the commission in collaboration with Shell Petroleum Development Company.

"We know the importance of power to a nation development that is why we are partnering with Shell on electrification of the communities; soon the design will be out Ugwoha said.

In his speech the Soku Community Development Committee Chairman, Wariboko Ekine pledge the readiness of the people to cooperate with the contractor to deliver the shore protection project.
Soku is the second community where oil was struck in commercial quantity in 1968.

NUPENG tankers commence warning strike in Lagos

The petroleum tanker drivers unit of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers [NUPENG] has commenced a warning strike in Lagos state, Nigeria South West region.

The workers say that the Nigerian police released suspected adulterators of petroleum products who were initially apprehended by the tanker drivers.

The workers add that the adulterators were caught mixing diesel and kerosene and are protesting the alleged release by police of 20 trucks and their drivers.

Leadership of NUPENG has, therefore, vowed not to lift any product until police re-arrest and prosecute the suspects whom the union described as economic saboteurs and enemies of the society.

The suspects were arrested on Friday, but were released the following day after an alleged meeting with the management of AGS Barma.

Confirming the development, Chairman, Western Zone of NUPENG, Comrade Tokunbo Korodo, accused the police of not only compromising, but also aiding and abetting economic saboteurs.

Comrade Korodu said: On Friday, our task force got wind that some people were allegedly adulterating diesel and kerosine at AGS Barma Yard. Our team moved in swiftly but they were stopped at the gate by a detachment of police from Itire.

I called on the Commissioner of Police and reported the matter. He gave the number of Area D, Mushin, commander to me. I called the commander and he called the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, before we were allowed into the yard.

At the yard, 20 trucks and their drivers were allegedly mixing diesel with kerosine. They were promptly arrested and moved to Itire Police station. From there, in company of some of our men they were taken to Area D.

FG promises to find lasting solution to floods in Akwa Ibom

Five persons were confirmed dead while more than 200 sustained injuries following massive flooding in four coastal communities in Ibeno area of Akwa Ibom.

The flood, resulting from a downpour on August 11, led to an ocean surge that damaged economic trees, household property and buildings worth millions of naira.

Mr Umesi Emenike, South/South Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), told pressmen on Friday in Port Harcourt that Itak Abasi, Iwokpom, Okoro Itak, and Ikot Inwang were affected.

Emenike, who led a search-and-rescue team to the area, said the disaster in the fishing communities was immense, adding that the sources of livelihood of the people had been destroyed.

"Some of their fishing boats and fishing nets were swept away. Others were also destroyed and some were buried in the ground.

"The only source of clean water, a mono pump, was swept away and the local water pond contaminated by the sea water," he said.

Emenike also disclosed that public institutions such as primary schools and health centres were destroyed.

The NEMA official said there were fears of more riverside communities close to the Atlantic Ocean experiencing the same surge if measures were not taken

"What took place in Ibeno is one of the consequences of climate change and more communities living close to the Atlantic Ocean are likely to face the same situation if urgent actions are not taken,'' he said.

He called for the execution of shore protection and land reclamation projects in vulnerable communities through the allocation of special funds.

Emenike advised residents of coastal communities to imbibe the culture of tree planting, adding that they should also take advantage of other proactive measures to protect their environment.

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Charles Agbo who visited the site promised that the government will find a lasting solution to the problem.

Amnesty: UN must not use flawed data on cause of Nigeria oil spills

Amnesty International has challenged the credibility of data cited by a senior U.N official investigating oil-impacted sites in Ogoni land rivers state.

A United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) official is reported to have said that 90 per cent of oil spills in Ogoni land were due to sabotage and criminal activity, and just 10 per cent due to equipment failure and negligence by companies such as shell.

The rights group in a statement challenged UNEPs reliance on the figures, adding that they were produced by Nigerian regulatory agencies that are known to depend heavily on the oil companies themselves when it comes to spill investigations.

Director of amnesty international's global thematic issues program says that relying on these figures would be a serious misjudgment, with potentially significant ramifications for those living in the Niger Delta.

Amnesty international is also asking for independent oversight of the oil industry in the Niger Delta, including disclosure of all relevant information on the causes of oil pollution.

"Relying on these figures would be a serious misjudgement, with potentially significant ramifications for those living in the Niger Delta," said Audrey Gaughran, Director of Amnesty Internationals Global Thematic Issues Program. "UNEP must be aware that the figures have been strongly challenged for years by environmental groups and communities. They are totally lacking in credibility."

"The people of the Niger Delta have been lied to and denied justice for decades. The issue of oil spill causation is sensitive. If UNEP is going to comment on the cause of oil spills it should do so only on the basis of hard and credible evidence, not figures that are a source of conflict."

In June 2009 an Amnesty International report on the human rights impacts of oil pollution concluded that the oil spill investigation system in the Niger Delta was totally lacking in independence, and was inadequate to determine the proportion of oil spills caused by sabotage, as opposed to equipment failure. Amnesty International found that in many cases oil companies have significant influence on determining the cause of a spill. The report documents examples of cases where Shell claimed the cause of a spill was sabotage, but the claim was subsequently questioned by other investigations or the courts.

Amnesty International has called for independent oversight of the oil industry in the Niger Delta, including disclosure of all relevant information on the causes of oil pollution.

Between 1989 and 1994 Shell itself estimated that only 28 percent of oil spilt in the Niger Delta was caused by sabotage. In 2007 Shell's estimate had risen to 70 per cent. The figure now given by Shell has increased to more than 90 per cent. Amnesty International has repeatedly asked Shell to produce evidence to support these figures. Shell has been unable to do so.

"While sabotage and vandalism are serious problems, there is no evidence to support the figures offered by oil companies and the Nigerian government agencies," said Audrey Gaughran.

From Glo, Style Nokia 97... Loaded year for Rita Dominic

IT’S a busy year for Rita Uchenna Nkem Dominic Nwaturocha, who is currently the Glo Ambassador and new face of the stylish Nokia 97 series phone. Rita admits that it will be a loaded year for her, saying: “Besides acting and endorsements, I will be working on my biography. It will be a fun book to read and I hope, it will motivate younger people to go for their dreams. I am writing it with Joy Bewaji and we are hoping to attract and encourage Nollywood fans to read it.” She continues, “the writing phase is taking longer than I anticipated, but I am hopeful that it will turn out great.” The University of Port Harcourt theatre arts graduate reviewed her works in 2009 with a plan to formerly launch her production outfit. The Imo-born Rita, however, stressed that she will not be distracted by some unnamed persons, who circulated damaging text messages about her person late last year.

2009 productions:

It was a busy period for me, even though I shot lesser films than I used to do. Anyway as you know, for two years now, I have been trying hard to do more challenging works. So getting the Globacom deal last year helped me more not to accept shoddy and uninspired scripts. Glo flew us to South Africa for a week to shoot a major television advert with all the West African Glo Ambassadors. Throughout last year, I worked for Glo on several events and photo shoots. That kept me and has continued to keep me busy. I also visited beautiful Malawi courtesy of DSTV within the year, which was another boost for my acting career.

Nollywood is massive in so many parts of Africa, but it is so frustrating that our government does not see this as a source of revenue, re-branding and job creation.

Anyway towards the end of last year, Nokia made me a brand ambassador for the stylish Nokia N97 and I had to attend promotional events for them. I starred in a couple of movies last year. I shot movies for Izu Ojukwu, Tchidi Chikere, Ifeanyi Onyeabor, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen, Donald Okoli, Kingsley Okereke and Iyke Odife, but only Tchidi’s was released. I know Ifeanyi Onyeabor’s Fulani was premiered towards the end of year, but I am not sure if it has been released to the market. My fans should look out for me in 2010 as I have a few projects to do in the year.

Why she named her production outfit after Audrey Hepburn and Joke Silva

My business partners and I wanted to name the company after people who have excelled in their movie careers, and still embodied values that can be emulated. Aunty Joke came up, so, did Meryl Streep and Audrey Hepburn. We settled on Auntie Joke and Audrey, which is why we called it The Audrey Silva Company. We are still going through registrations and we should be launching out pretty soon. We have five scripts we are considering and it has been so tedious deciding, which two to shoot. There is a fantastic story by Dionne Jemide, but we have to partner with some Hollywood special effects people, so, we have shifted it to year end.

To my detractors

I truly had a fantastic December in spite of some people threatening to kill me and writing all sorts of malicious stories via sms texts. The only thing that bothered me was the threat to physically injure me outside getting the numbers of some of my fans that called me. It is still being investigated, so, I do not want to talk about it. I don’t know the perpetrators, but for they not threatening me three years ago, shows I must be doing something good that have attracted the attention of some people. I hope they are ready for 2010 because God has not finished with me. I wish phone companies would start registering sim cards like they used to, when GSM phones just came out. It will reduce these deadly games people play with them.

Why I’m always on Izu Ojukwu’s set

I made it a rule a long time ago to work with only directors and producers, who take movie making seriously. So, if you find me working with Izu Ojukwu severally, then it is because he takes movie making seriously and I am happy working for him. Though, he is not the only director I admire his works. I love Tchidi Chikere’s works, too. I shot Be Not Afraid with him and it is out in the market now. I would love to work with Tunde Kelani because I love his works. In February, I am going on set to shoot for Adonai Productions. Izu Ojukwu is directing it and Ramsey and Chidi are supposed to be starring as well.

Stop acting?

No, I can never stop acting. The Glo deal was in February and Nokia came in September. Acting and endorsements complement each other, when it is done right. It is nice to know that corporate Nigerians are beginning to understand the power of using known faces to help sell their product. I am very serious about working for the products.

Nollywood actor in divorce controversy

Fred and Wife

A Lagos High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday March 29, 2010, adjourned further hearing in the petition for dissolution of marriage sought by Nollywood actor, Fred Aseroma, against his wife, Blessing Aseroma, till April 30, 2010.

From evidence before the court, Mr. Aseroma, 40, had on November 4, 2009 submitted an affidavit of urgency, praying the court to dissolve his marriage to enable him remarry a British resident, so as to complete his education in the United Kingdom.

“I have been living in the United Kingdom without the appropriate papers for some time as a student. [That] my wife-to-be in the UK does not wish to accommodate me any longer unless I am able to formally obtain divorce from my present marriage. [That] the only option available to me to remain in the UK is get married to a resident, to enable me conclude my studies,” read the affidavit signed by Mr. Aseroma.

Though the case did not come up for mention owing to the ongoing deployment of Lagos State judges, Mrs. Aseroma, 38, said her husband has not been truthful about his marital situation to the court. She said her husband has already got married to his would-be benefactor in the UK, while not yet divorced from her.

“He told the court that I left our matrimonial home because of his absence to seek for greener pastures. This is not true. Even when he kept travelling to the UK and hardly sent upkeep money, I have always been at our house in Ojodu with our three kids and his brother, Temotighe, who lives in the same house with us,” Mrs Aseroma said.

In a media report (not NEXT) published on February 3, 2010, Mr. Aseroma was said to have secretly married Titi Jacobs, described as a ‘London Big Girl’ seeking “to be a successful film maker”; with them both living in an apartment in Hackney, London.

The report also read: “Fred who relocated to London few years ago is seeking greener pastures in UK after he fell on bad times in Nigeria and the only way for him to survive in UK is by getting married to someone who can help him facilitate his resident papers.”

Following Mr. Aseroma’s arrest last week Friday by the Ojodu-Abiodun Police Division over allegations of wife battery, Mrs. Aseroma, who met her husband over 10 years ago while they were both students at the University of Lagos, said she is willing to concede to her husband’s request for a divorce, but not on his terms.

“I have suffered his beating for over 10 years. I cannot take it any longer. Let us go our separate ways. But I will not accept for him to take my children from me. These are the same children that I am the one taking care of, looking for money everywhere to pay their school fees,” Mrs. Aseroma said.

Mr. Aseroma had asked the court to grant him custody of their children, aged six, eight and 10 years, while proposing that their mother “have access to the children once a month” and that they “spend part of their long holidays” with their mother.

Also commenting, counsel to Mrs. Aseroma, Simeon Ikani of Ikani, Afolabi and Co. Chambers, questioned the procedure applied by Mr. Aseroma in seeking his divorce, which he said suggests wanting the court to hear and determine the marriage dissolution proceedings without Mrs. Aseroma contesting.

“The petitioner (Mr. Aseroma) filed his first petition for dissolution of marriage on March 4, 2009. Another petition was filed on October 8, 2009 with the affidavit for urgency filed in November 2009. But throughout this time, my client (Mrs. Aseroma) was never served. I had to apply myself for all the documents,” Mr. Ikani said.

Though all phone calls and text messages to Mr. Aseroma went unanswered, his lawyer, Lawrence Ehiwogwu, in a telephone call, said he would not comment, as the case is in court.

“My friend, why are you wasting your credit? The matter is in court. I cannot place it in the domain of public opinion. You can find out from the court,” Mr. Ehiwogwu said.

‘I Rejected Sex For Movie Role’--Mercy Johnson

Sultry Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson, has said that achieving success in the Nigerian movie industry was not on a bed of roses, as she had been asked to take movie role in exchange for sex.

Mercy, who is arguably the most sought-after Nollywood actress of the moment, told nigeriafilms.com in an interview that it takes only God to be successful in the Nigerian movie industry.

When asked if she has been a victim of sexual harassment, the Kogi State-born damsel: said “yes! Such had come my way, but if you sleep around for roles, will you also sleep around to make your fans love your work? You only choose what you want. It only takes God to be successful in this industry.

“It’s a matter of choice if the ladies are approached with such. If you feel that your body is cheap and worth the script, then go ahead, but it is an individual thing. If any lady tells you in Nollywood it hasn’t happened to her, it is a cheap lie. Most people are scared of telling the truth, but the truth makes upcoming ones to watch their steps without making mistakes.”

Mercy was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth, so her growing up was terribly tough and now that the story has turned to success, she wouldn’t mind becoming a child again if she has her way.

Hear her: “When I was in secondary school, I would wash my mates’ clothes and polish their shoes to get paid so that I can also pay my brother’s school fees, and whenever names of people owing school fees were mentioned, mine was always on top of the list.

“I faced a lot of embarrassment in school. My teachers flogged me; my uniform was always torn and tattered. When someone stole, they pointed at me because of my poor condition. It was a miserable life, but today, they’re most shocked at my success. I lived an inferior life throughout my school days… if I have my way; I want to be a child again and live large.”

I would love to settle down- Dakore

Dakore Egbuson is not the kind of actress that can be spotted just anywhere and anyhow. Her mission and vision in the entertainment industry as a whole is very clear to her and she sure knows her way around.

According to the Bayelsa indigene, who doubles as ambassador for Amstel Malta and spokesperson for Amnesty International and Oxfam of America for the control of arms and ammunition, her rise to fame was as a result of her brilliant performance in her fifth movie, Emotional Cry and she has not looked back since then.

“I was on the campus of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) but was unable to complete my degree programme because I left in the third year as a result of incessant strikes and went to London to develop my talents. In London, I started working as a presenter on BEN TV and was on the Black Variety show with Ronke Apampa. There I started doing music and performed at big events with top acts like Tony Allen and Weird MC. But before I left for England, I had starred in four movies Silent Tears, Play Boy, Tentacles and She Devils. The movies came out when I was trying to build a career and was away in London in 2000 but after the movies came out, people were so impressed with my performance and they persuaded me to come home that Nollywood is really doing fine and all that. That was how my acting career blew up. I won an award for my role in Emotional Cry, which was my fifth movie. Emotional Cry, which was released in 2003 shot me into limelight and I rose to stardom. That, of course, was a turning point in my life,” she recounted.

This first child of a building contractor and caterer reeled that the discovery of her talent is as a result of her parents’ encouragement, which included paying for arts lessons and enrolling her in a school that would help notice her talent early in life.

“I am the first born of my family. I have three brothers and a sister, my father was a building contractor. He had his own construction company and worked with Shell for several years. He is now retired and in the United States. My mum is a caterer and at the same time taking care of the home. My father knew me as an artiste as a kid and he encouraged me. He paid for the recorder lesson, sent me to good schools. In a way, my background has really helped my acting career. I went to Corona School, Gbagada, Lagos one of the best schools in Nigeria, which I am very proud of. It was at Corona that I discovered my talents. I always loved to act, dance and sing. I was a member of the choir and was everywhere doing something. I got a lot of time to express myself artistically,” said the dazzling actress with stunning modelling features.

How she has been able to maintain her unusual lifestyle, which is devoid of the everyday celebrity lifestyle is what she has termed as the grace of God and her ability to learn very quickly in life.

“When I started out it wasn’t my intention to be famous. I had a talent and I was excited about my talent and where it would take me. Fame is as a result of being an actor because I wasn’t prepared for it. It is by the grace of God because I can’t take any credit for it. Naturally, I am a very boring and low-key person. I don’t go out that much. I am not the type that you see everywhere and that has always helped too. I don’t have too many friends.”

Though Dakore is not one who would readily tell the world about her private life, she still accepts the obvious fact that she is all over the moon with a certain young man. The young man, of course, is Olumide Akande.

“Oh yes there is a man but I wouldn’t want to talk about it. I’m not talking about him. I am a woman and I would love to settle down and have my own family someday but first, I have to ensure that I am in the right place at the right time. It would definitely happen but I am not anxious,” she said tersely.

The Amstel ambassador noted that she is happy to get the job, “I just got a call that they wanted me for an Amstel Malta advert and that was it. Amstel Malta was my major hit and it was amazing. I am proud of it. We shot the commercial in South Africa. It was my first time in South Africa. I went with a world-class crew. I had my own wardrobe, a make-up artiste. People love the advert and they praise me on the road that the advert is good. Amstel Malta has supported Nollywood in a big way and I am very honoured to be its model.”

Dakore, who is still passionate about her music career, also said that she is doing all within her reach to stage a successful outing and not just sizzle like some of her fellow Nollywood colleagues.

“I am doing what I can to have a successful outing. And that is why I took it to Los Angeles in the United States, working with Akon’s producer and people who have been in the business for over two decades. I am also coming out with my talk show entitle Dakore Show.”

Dakore, who has her mum, Oprah Winfrey and late Alaere Alaibe as outstanding role models, said about her dreadlocks: “I am only trying to create an identity for myself, it is the hairstyle that I’m comfortable with, I have been growing it for years now and it’s been wonderful, my hair is growing and people admire me.”

Fair Mike and the price of stardom

Nollywood actor, Mike Ezurounye is a private person. At his insistence, this interview is conducted in his car. As we make our way from Anthony to Surulere, he is spotted by fans that recognise him instantly, causing him to light up in a shy grin. "That's the price we have to pay for being in the limelight. I have lost my privacy," he says. Over the next 90 minutes, no question is out of bounds, save for his age. "I am old enough to do what adults do," he says laughing. He is fresh off the set of a movie in Abuja where he played a pastor torn between the lust for the flesh and his spiritual duties.

Mike

As he speaks, the suave actor occasionally stares out the window to wave to yet another set of fans. Other times he tries to avoid them. Celebrity obviously has its pain. In his navy blue corduroy blazers atop pair of black pants Ezurounye is quite dapper. I ask how he handles female fans. "Maturely," he quips. The actor also talks about onset romance. "It's a job. A lot of people think that when we kiss on set it is real, what you see is the movie. Trust me, there are so many people behind that camera... So, nothing can happen".

Born and raised in Lagos to disciplinarian parents, the boyish looking actor was exposed to the klieg lights from a tender age. "I was really an NTA kid. I had a headmistress, Mrs Njideaka, who was involved with NTA, so I was always going to the NTA to do variety show, debates such as Kiddies Junction', ‘Kiddies Debate' and lots of other stuff."

Nollywood Calling

Although he wanted to become a lawyer, he ended up studying accountancy. Upon graduation, he worked in a bank and later a shipping firm. The company relocated to Tanzania when the MD's best friend became president of that country. Ezurounye's first acting opportunity appeared around this time, while he was torn between moving to Tanzania and quitting the firm. By chance he met Ruke Amata, who would become his mentor. "I got my first movie role from Ruke Amata's recommendation but it never saw the light of day-it was a series by Zeb Ejiro titled Ultimate Heroes."

While at school, he was nicknamed ‘Fair Mike the Recorder' because of his ability to imitate colleagues and seniors. "That nickname is one thing I have going for me which in turn has helped me switch characters. I was always joking with it but I took my education serious, so it was not considered a weakness by my parents." This trait was all he needed to land his first big role.

"I was on my way to drop a friend of mine, Songito when I stopped over at a filling station at Maryland. While mimicking my uncle to my cousin over the phone I was speaking phonetics, I didn't know that there was a director -Dickson Ireogbu - behind me who liked the way I spoke and had a character such as mine in mind. He asked me if I ever considered acting and that was where it started." Ireogbu featured him as a lead actor in ‘Broken Marriage'. He acted alongside established acts like Pete Edochie (who reminded him of his late father_ and Chioma Chukwuka-Apkotha.

However, not until he starred in Critical Decision, where he played a physically-challenged character alongside A-listers like Richard Mofe-Damijo, Genevieve Nnaji and Ngozi Ezeonu, did he achieve mainstream acclaim. Things changed dramatically for him afterwards, and he found himself on the path of six digit artist fee. He was soon being touted as a replacement for Ramsey Noah; and quickly consolidated his big break with appearances in movies like Emotional Blackmail, Bless Me and Kill the bride.

No easy walk to fame

The road to the top didn't come without challenges, which he however says failed to deter him. "There was this one time I was on set and one of the known stars came and said ‘hey come here, go call me that guy'. I knew I was older than that person and she was talking to me because she said it to my hearing and was pointing at me. All I did was tell the guy seated beside me to go tell her to come to me if she wanted to talk to me because I thought that was rude. I do not do that to upcoming actors... Whenever I have upcomers on set I talk with them and make them comfortable. I am one person who has a lot of self esteem."

Worst movie role

In a little over five years in Nollywood, Ezurounye has featured in no less than 100 movies - but has endured his fair share of bad press. He believes it comes with the job. "I tell myself that if you are not important, no one will talk about you. When it is good I am happy; when it is bad, I say I wish they could understand me. Professionally, we always say that every form of publicity, either good or bad, is publicity since in some way it does extend your clientele."

He says that the worst thing ever written about him was: "that I had an affair with someone who I knew for sure I had only seen three times in my life. It was so sad that someone could just cook up something like that. It just shows that some people want to get you up inside. They will be like, how come this guy is just having neat run? So, they just want to taint you your image a little bit."

And his most embarrassing moment? "When a couple of Aruba students on tour in a UK mall rushed at me and tore my shirt. I was surprised because obviously they were not Nigerians but I still took it in good stride." Driven by the urge to excel, he confesses to watching all his movies by himself because "I watch to criticise... I take up a lot of challenging scripts because I feel I am a lot more challenged when I take up roles which are different from the everyday Mike." His dream role is "to play an old man from start to finish." Unlike many of his colleagues, music is not on the cards.

Life is good

Despite the meltdown of the past year, Ezurounye insists business has been good. In 2009, he was made a Globacom ambassador and the face of Malt Guinness. "I feel great. It shows that the corporate world is watching and appreciate my craft which is why I try to make it as natural as possible. I have to do a whole lot more because it comes with a new sense of responsibility."

Already he's looking at the future. "I want to be a proper brand for Nollywood, a very big vehicle which has in some way rebranded Nigeria - definitely Nigeria's best export to the outside world. [I also want] to be a positive spokesperson for young [people]."

The ride comes to an end, and it is time to say goodbye. As I step out of the car, his last words come as advice. "Be a good girl," he says, smiling mischievously. As he drives off, some people recognise him. His words come back to mind; this is merely the price to be paid for stardom.
