The authorities of the University of Ado Ekiti may have set the students against Governor Kayode Fayemi as it allegedly posted on the school website that all students should pay the controversial new tuitions imposed on the students by ousted Governor Segun Oni-led administration, forcing the Students Union Government to issue a 7-day ultimatum to the governor who announced a downward review.
A statement by the SUG, spokesman, Owolabi Oluwapelumi and made available to Daily Sun over the weekend, declared that the students were disappointed in the school authority‚ insistence on the controversial tuitions despite the inaugural speech of Governor Fayemi that the fees would be reviewed downward.
Expressing confidence and hope in Governor Fayemi, the students said they were sure that the governor would make good his promise to slash the ‚ tuition imposed on them by Segun Oni despite the position of the school authority which wanted them to regard the inaugural speech as mere political statement.
The controversial tuitions handed down to the students by Mr Oni in collaboration with the institution‚authorities, had caused series of protests by the students and ultimately stoning the entourage of the Governor when the then Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Oluseyi Petinrin came to the varsity‚inaugural lecture. They, however, argued that the current stance of the institution‚Äôs management ran contrary to the philosophy of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Governor Fayemi of qualitative and affordable education for Nigerian students in conducive environment.
In the same vein, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone D, in another statement vowed to resist the alleged attempt by the Federal Government to face out Colleges of Education in the country. Jointly signed by its Coordinator, Mr Opeyemi Eniola, Secretary, Thomas Arowolo and Public Relations Officer (PRO), David Ibietan respectively, the statement alleged the move was an attempt to‚ the education sector.‚
They vowed to mobilize over three million students to Abuja to protest against the move with a view to forcing the Federal Government to drop the idea.
A separate statement by National Association of Nigeria Students Joint Campus Committee (NANSJCC) called for immediate reinstatement of all student leaders who were victimized and expelled in various higher institutions in the country. Signed by the Zonal Chairman, Oluwaseun Akogun and the Secretary, Arifayan Louis, the statement read that the demand was made in the spirit of resolving the crises in the education sector for improved academic standard in the nation.
