Nigeria’s Information Minister Dora Akunyili has quit the cabinet and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday to run as an opposition candidate for the Senate in Nationwide elections next April.
Following her resignation,
President Goodluck Jonathan appointed the Minister of State for Information Mr. Labaran Maku as the substantive Minister of Information and communication.Professor Akunyili’s resignation was announced to the federal executive council by the President Goodluck Jonathan who was said to be reluctant to accept her resignation.
Speaking to state house correspondent, Professor Akunyili said it was the burning desire to serve her state that brought about her aspiration.
Akunyili said she planned to compete for a seat in the Senate on the platform of the opposition All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Party, which controls her south-eastern home state of Anambra.
“I am resigning the cabinet with effect from tomorrow,” Akunyili told reporters after the Federal Executive Council Meeting in Abuja.
“I have decided to join Anambra state governor Peter Obi, who is doing a great job in continuing to build Anambra state, as an APGA senator. I intend to pick up the nomination form today,” she said.
