Men of the Special Task Force appeared at the scene and dispersed the crowd with sporadic shootings into the air. However, this was not before three people had been killed. Efforts to get confirmation from the police proved abortive as the Commissioner of Police, Abdurrahman Akano who confirmed the clash said nobody was killed, But eye witness disclosed that three bodies were removed from scene of the clash in a station wagon car.
The sporadic shooting from Farin Gada further heightened the tension in the capital city as clashes were also
recorded between supporters of the Congress For Progressive Change (CPC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The CPC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari stormed Jos for his rally despite warning on the security implication of his visit to the crisis-prone state.
Business activities were paralyzed as a result of the sporadic shootings making people to hurriedly close their shops and business concerns and hurried home while parents stormed schools to remove their kids.
Sources learn that a clash between supporters of the parties around ECWA Church, Bishara 2, Opposite Jankwano Hospital, left one person dead. The death was caused by a stray bullet shot into the air to disperse supporters.
The victim was rushed to the Jankwano Hospital where he gave up. At the Masalachi Jumm’ah road tear gas were used severally to disperse youths who were gathered to have a glimpse of the CPC presidential candidate who was to visit the Gong Gwom, Council of Ulama and Officials of the Christian Association of Nigeria after leaving Government House in Rayfield.
Governor Jonah Jang who had to shelve his local government campaign for Jos North scheduled for Monday because of the visit of the former Head of State said while receiving General Buhari at Government House, that he had no problem with his coming to Jos.
He said the problem was with the supporters who could become unruly and urged the CPC flag bearer to warn the supporters to be law abiding.
General Buhari had told the governor that his visit to the Government House was to tell him that he had come to Jos for his presidential campaign.
Despite the security checks and tension, hundreds of his supporters; mainly the youths had stormed the polo ground to receive General Buhari.
Addressing thousands of supporters at the rally, General Buhari said changes in this country were inevitable, because the situation had reached an alarming proportion, where insecurity, hunger, and all forms of criminality had become the hallmark the citizens of this country.
General Buhari assured Nigerians that when elected as the President of this country, the problem of power outages would be a thing of the past; the educational sector, health, water as well as economic sectors would be improved upon considerable. He added that, his
administration would improve the security problem the whole nation is facing presently.
“I will make security which is paramount to the lives of ordinary citizens of this country, especially Plateau state, I will restore peace in the state, I was a General Officer Commanding (GOC) here, I know the state and I know the policy to adopt, so we will make changes in this country”.
He also said he would improve the condition of service for all the workers in the country, including the police, the Air force, the Navy and the Army assuring that there would be little or no embezzlement and the money in government coffers would be used to service the nation only”.
Also speaking at the Polo Field, the presidential running mate to Buhari, Pastor Tunde Bakari said only General Buhari who had been a governor, one time Minister of Petroleum, Head of states as well as chairman of the Petroleum Trust Funds (PTF), without stealing a kobo can restructure Nigeria and restore discipline into the minds of the citizens.
He stressed: “People were killed in Plateau, both Muslims and Christians died, while Federal and the state government could not do anything; promising that the government will establish a kind of community policing that would give people a sense of belonging and security.”
