NDDC to tackle flood in Soku community

The Niger Delta Development Commission [NDDC] says it is working towards finding a solution to the flood problem in Soku, an oil rich community in Rivers State. 

Managing Director of the NDDC, Mr. Chibuzor Ugwoha said this when representatives of the community visited him at the commission's headquarters in Port-Harcourt.

Mr. Ugwoha who assured that a team of engineers will be dispatched immediately to the community to assess the level of damage said an interim arrangement will be made to combat the flooding, pending the commencement of work on the canalization project.

Mr. Chibuzor Ugwoha said the shore protection project in the community will be reviewed to include canaliation as a deliberate effort to save the area from being submerged.

"Soku like every other community in the Niger Delta is dear to us and it is our desire to intervene in their needs. Nobody prays for this type of thing to happen, but when it does we shall fund solution to it," he said.

He dispelled insinuations that the Soku shore protection project has been abandoned adding "we are in touch with the contractor, he is mobilizing back to site please cooperate with him".

On request for provision of electricity in the community, the NDDC Boss announced that Soku will benefit from a comprehensive electrification project being planned by the commission in collaboration with Shell Petroleum Development Company.

"We know the importance of power to a nation development that is why we are partnering with Shell on electrification of the communities; soon the design will be out Ugwoha said.

In his speech the Soku Community Development Committee Chairman, Wariboko Ekine pledge the readiness of the people to cooperate with the contractor to deliver the shore protection project.
Soku is the second community where oil was struck in commercial quantity in 1968.
