Head of the UN Peace keeping Operations, Mr Alain Le Roy, has requested a meeting with defeated President of Cote d'Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo.
A statement issued by the UN Operations in Cote d'Ivoire (ONUCI) on Monday, said Roy, who arrived in Abidjan on Monday, had sent a message requesting a meeting with Gbagbo and was awaiting a response.
"As head of peacekeeping operations, my first objective is to come and support our missions, especially when they face particularly delicate moments as is now the case in Côte d'Ivoire.
UNOCI, the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire, is facing a population and political leaders who are partially hostile to its presence," the statement quoted Roy as saying.
The statement further said it was important for the UN headquarters in New York to continue to provide support for UNOCI and ensure that it fulfilled its mandate.

It said that Roy met with President Alassane Ouattara and his team at the Golf Hotel, Riviera, where he had been operating since November 28. (NAN).
The statement added that Ouattara said UNOCI was fulfilling its mandate satisfactorily, but called for improvements.
Cote d'Ivoire has been teetering towards civil war after a run-off election that the Ivorian electoral commission said Alassane Ouattara, an opposition, won.
The Constitutional council, however, announced Gbagbo as the winner of the election.
ECOWAS and the UN had decided to use legitimate force to remove Gbagbo, if he refuses to relinquish power. (NAN)
